Consignment and Thrift Shops
|
Consignment and thrift shops can be an excellent way to find high quality low cost merchandise. Sure, much of the merchandise at consignment and thrift shops is junk, but those willing to do a little searching can find some real bargains.
Thrift shops are retail stores operated by charities as a means of fundraising. Typically, the goods are donated and the stores are staffed by volunteers, so they can sell merchandise much cheaper than other retailers that deal in used items.
Consignment shops sell products owned by a third party in exchange for a commission on the sale. While consignment shops also deal in used merchandise, they often also sell new merchandise. Many artists and craftspeople sell their works on consignment. Obviously items in a consignment store are not going to be as cheap as those in a thrift store, but the quality is typically much higher. Also many items often found in consignment shops are never found in thrift stores. In fact, consignment shops are probably your best chance to find great deals on items like antiques, furniture, tools, and musical instruments.
Online Consignment Shop
Amazon Marketplace and Ebay Stores are essentially online consignment shops. The advantage of an online consignment shop is a larger selection for buyers and more customers for sellers. The major disadvantage is that you don't get to inspect the item in person before purchase. Seller ratings are very helpful and almost all sellers with high ratings accurately describe items. Many sellers offer guarantees and sites like Amazon.com or Ebay have effective methods for resolving conflicts.
Shipping is another disadvantage with online consignment sales. Although shipping and handling charges are now often quite reasonable, very heavy or very inexpensive items are not often found online.
